Whether you're a digital pro or just casually scrolling, let's break down the trends shaping our online world this year. This is the real deal on what's making our feeds sizzle and what's losing its sparkle this year.

Growing Pains for TikTok

Far from being the spunky up and comer, TikTok is now firmly part of the social media establishment. And like all big platforms, the larger and more commerical it gets, it is at greater risk of losing its shine.

All of the issues other platforms such as Instagram has faced, will now be faced by TikTok. These include an oversaturation of ads, over-commercialisation, issues with censorship. and influencer fatigue. While TikTok tries to expand and improve as a platform (30 minute videos, TikTok shops etc.), the user base will typically push back and wax nostalgic for the days of the ‘old TikTok’, when it was more fun and less commercial.

Ins for TikTok:

  • Fun and engaging content: Let’s get back to what made TikTok great and focus on entertaining our audience rather than going for the hard sell.

  • TikTok as an extension of a company’s culture (what makes you special)

Outs for TikTok:

  • Inauthentic Influencer collabs

  • Long and boring videos

  • Blindly following trends without adding originality and personality

  • Repetative and boring ads

Social Media Managers

2022 and 2023 may have been the years that everyone wanted to become a social media manager, but 2024 will sort the diamonds from the paste. Social Media Management is growing up in 2024, with more of a focus on specialised roles, as well as a focus on different marketing disciplines working cohesively together.

Ins for Social Media Managers:

  • Becoming a platform expert - e.g. focusing on TikTok or Instagram rather than doing it all

  • Levelling up content creation skills

  • Embracing uniqueness & creativity

  • Showing your personality and being a thought leader

Outs for Social Media Managers:

  • Trying to ‘do it all’ and adding little value to clients

  • Working from afar and not offering video and photography as a service

  • Not understanding how organic social fits into a digital marketing strategy

Instagram

Could Instagram be having a comeback? As we saw above, as Instagram grew and became overly commercial, users complained about the algorithm and about not seeing the content that was relevant to them. Here are some ins and outs for Instagram.

Ins for Instagram:

  • More TikTok style content, more fun trends, vlogs etc.

  • Less polished, more interesting content

  • Community Building and consistency of posting

Outs for Instagram:

  • Following everyone else and adding little value

  • Only posting one type of content

  • Not showing personality via Stories

So while there is so much more we could say about social media trends for 2024, that wraps up this particular blog. If you’d like to chat to us about your strategy in 2024, please do feel free to contact us.
