How to create a brand photo shoot
We recently project managed a gorgeous brand photo shoot for one of our clients, Bellamy’s Organics. As a social media agency that offers content creation in our premium social media packages, we usually do photo shoots in house. However, when one of our clients has need for a shoot done on a larger scale for their overall marketing, we are also able to support this by project managing the process and working with an external team from our network of Melbourne creatives.
We’re so thrilled with how the photos from this recent shoot turned out. We thought it might be fun (and helpful) to share a bit about the process for anyone who wants to learn more. Here’s how we did it…
Step 1: Create a Mood Board
The very first step to a successful photo shoot is to have a clear brief of what the client actually wants and to understand how the photos will be used. From there, we can create a mood board and brainstorm ideas. We made use of Pinterest and Instagram to find reference pictures to set the overall look and feel of the shoot.
Step 2: Assemble the Perfect Creative Team
The next step is assembling your creative team. It's one of the most important things to get right if you want to produce quality photos. As mentioned, we do create social media content in house. However, for larger brand shoots, we tap into our network of inspiring creatives who specialise in their particular field. For this shoot, we found an amazing photographer, videographer, make up artist, and stylist. We made sure to brief them fully, show them our mood board and negotiate their contracts for the client.
We also found talent, including child models for the client, and ensured their fee fit into the budget and they were happy with the terms set by the client.
Step 3: Find Locations
Finding the right location is an essential part of creating a brand shoot. It's important to consider the aesthetic, as well as any permits you may need to shoot at that location.
Here are some tips for scouting locations:
Look for places with good lighting and great backgrounds that fit your brand's style. You can also consider using props, like furniture or signs, if you want them in your photos--but make sure they aren't too distracting from your product!
Make sure there's enough room for all of your models and crew members while they're shooting (especially if they'll be moving around). If not, try finding another spot nearby where there is more space available--or just shoot outside instead of indoors so everyone has more room to move around freely!
Step 4: Create a Shoot Schedule
Creating a shoot schedule is so important if you want things to run smoothly on the day. You need to have a realistic and clear plan so that everyone can stay on track. A shoot schedule should include key details such as start times, locations and what is happening when. Be sure to add in time for breaks too as your team will need to stop for lunch! A few days before the shoot be sure to check any last minute details including any weather considerations if you are shooting outside.
Step 5: Permits and Contracts
It’s super important to plan and negotiate any paperwork ahead of time so there are no last minute issues. You’ll need contracts for your creative team as well as talent release forms for any talent and locations. Research if there are any relevant shooting permits you need for your shoot!
Step 6: On The Day
On the day you should show up with all the gear and kit you need for a successful shoot. Think about planning catering, drinks and snacks ahead of time. On this shoot, we were working with children so it was super important to make sure they had everything they needed to stay happy and comfortable. We also made sure they had somewhere safe and closed off to change their clothes. It’s really important to think of any little details that will help people feel comfortable and allow the day to run smoothly.
Someone needs to be the time checker! This person should have the shoot schedule and cross of the shots as they are completed. They need to ensure the team stays on schedule and hurry things up if needed.
In conclusion, creating a brand shoot like this one is a massive task and it certainly helps to have the experts involved so that you get the outcome you are looking for. Shoots like this can be expensive as you work with the best of the best. However, I’m sure you’ll agree that the outcome is worth it. You can’t put a price on great brand images!
